UNDP promotes small arms control in Mozambique

UNDP has delivered equipment to the Mozambican Interior Ministry that will help to fight crime and promote security in the country.

A total of 18 vehicles, 50 radios, 23 computers, 19 monitors and four printers were handed over to the ministry yesterday.

The delivery was made as part of two related projects carried out in collaboration with the Government of the Netherlands: one intended to support the Mozambican police force, and the other designed to fight the proliferation of small arms in the country.

In time, the ministry will establish a database  to control and licence firearms which will not only help to assess the government’s track record on small arms control but will also help to fight and prevent crime in Mozambique.

The handover ceremony was attended by the Minister of the Interior José Pacheco, UNDP’s Resident Representative Ndolamb Ngokwey and Paul Litjens, the representative of the Netherlands in Mozambique.

Organized crime has been on the rise in Mozambique, with bank robberies, murders and abductions becoming more common. UNDP has been helping to support the police’s national action plan to respond to this recent trend.
