UNDP and convention to promote biodiversity in development

UNDP has signed an agreement with the Secretariat of the Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD) that will help to integrate the sustainable use of biodiversity into many development projects around the world.

The Memorandum of Understanding creates a unique strategic partnership between UNDP and the Convention, an international treaty signed in 1992 that aims to develop national strategies for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity.

The three specific objectives of the Convention are to: conserve biological diversity; use its components sustainably; help to share genetic resources fairly.

UNDP will make its knowledge network available and help to train the CBD Secretariat and its national focal points. In return the CBD Secretariat will share its guidance on the integration of biodiversity management into development.

“This agreement is key to the achievement of the three objectives of the Convention and in fulfilling the promise of heads of state in 2002 to substantially reduce the rate of biodiversity loss by 2010 and to achieve the MDGs”, said Ahmed Djoghlaf, the Executive Secretary to the Convention.

“Biodiversity is key to achieving sustainable development and therefore we need the full engagement of the UN’s lead development agency”, he added.

“This cooperation will bring many benefits,” said Veerle Vandeweerd, Director of UNDP’s "Environment and Energy" focus area. “Biodiversity is a vital resource for those struggling with poverty and plays a critical role in the maintenance of food and water supplies as well as providing fuel and shelter. It is also fundamental to the overall sustainability of development because of its role in maintaining vital ecosystem services and increasing resilience against climate change.”

A steering committee of senior officials from both organizations will oversee the implementation of the MOU, draw up a programme of work, and regularly review progress.
