Administrator Helen Clark met today with Hilary Benn, the UK Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
In light of the upcoming Copenhagen conference on climate change, they discussed the need for a new deal for the environment
that would be capable of tackling poverty, including energy poverty, and providing a low carbon footprint route to development.
They also stressed the inclusion of the poorest countries in the final outcome of the conference and the need for strong partnerships
with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and other UN organizations. Discussions also addressed the issue of the
food crisis and the need to reinvest in sustainable rural development.
The UK has a longstanding strategic partnership
with UNDP, including in the fields of energy and the environment, and is consistently among UNDP’s top contributors. To
