UNDP in Nigeria has just concluded the calculation of its carbon footprint for the 2009 operational year. The Office has also kick-started activities to disseminate and replicate the results using United Nations Greenhouse Gas calculators in Nigeria, with the aim of utilizing the data to help the organization move toward climate neutrality.  

The UN House, the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Federal Ministry of Environment are amongthe institutions that will replicate the model.  Following the initiative, the UNDP Country Office will also set up programmes to raise awareness of the consequences of, and reduce, Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions.

With 176 staff operating from the UN House, Abuja,  UNDP’s emission amounted to about 986.7 tonnes of CO2 in 2009. The average operational greenhouse gas (GHG) footprint of the office for the reporting year was 5.6 tonnes of CO2 per UNDP staff associated with the UN House.  

The carbon emission profile of the office revealed that official air travel accounted for 65% of the carbon footprint, on site fuel combustion accounted for 15%, purchased electricity resulted in 12% of the total emission, while official vehicle fleet accounted for 8% of the Office’s carbon emission.  

UNDP Nigeria hopes to use the available data to reduce the carbon footptrint associated with its operations and to explore offset potentials with a view to achievingclimate neutrality.  The Country Office in Nigeria joined the global UNDP initiative in participating in the 2008 GHG Emission inventory, the result of which served as the base year for the organization.
