On Thursday, September 15, the United Nations held a memorial service in honor of the victims of the 26 August bomb attack
on the UN House in Abuja, Nigeria.
Twenty-three died and 116 were injured in the bombing.
Over 1,000 people
attended the service, including the families of the deceased, Nigerian government officials, UN personnel, diplomats and religious
leaders. Troops wearing UN peacekeeping blue berets honored the dead with a multiple gun salute while dignitaries laid wreaths
on the grounds of the UN House.
The participants included the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria, Ambassador
Gbenga Ashiru, and UN Resident Coordinator, Mr. Daouda Touré.
The United Nations in Nigeria will continue its
mission to improve the lives of poor people, to conquer hunger, disease and illiteracy and to encourage respect for each other’s
rights and freedoms. We will always remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for this noble cause.
